CONCIOUS TRAVEL

Travel is not the enemy. I believe it's an amazing way to understand and appreciate new cultures, to get out and explore and try new things. But there is a way to do it sustainably. Conscious travel is to be mindful of how your vacation impacts the local community. It's about the intersection of culture, the economy, and the environment. It's about constant reflection, but here's where you can start:

1. VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLAR

Your pocket money is essentially an economic stimulus, no matter how small the contribution. With every purchase you make, you're showing that you support certain products, missions, and industries. Align your spending with your values. Maybe that means shopping small and supporting local artisans. Maybe that means avoiding tourist traps that exploit animals instead of offering them sanctuary. Whatever it means to you, it's time to put your money where your mouth is.

2. SCRATCH BENEATH THE SURFACE
Take the time to see a city for what it is, instead of what the tourism industry attempts to portray it as. Immerse yourself in the good and acknowledge the bad. Is there something you can do about it?

3. QUESTION THE NORM

Do your research. Just because everyone else is swimming with the dolphins, does that mean you should? Make an educated decision based on how you want to spend your time and money. Try to get a better understanding of a business' practices before you support them.
